The latest on the RAKwireless High Power Booster (formerly 1-watt booster)

We announced in early August that we received new information from the final FCC report on this product. FCC approval came late July, but we only received the final FCC report recently and found limitations to peak power for USA and Meshtastic use. The product was not available for sale yet at the time.

What we found was the device in its current shipping configuration, is currently FCC-certified (FCC ID: 2AF6B-13302) for a maximum conducted output power of 290 mW (approximately 24.6 dBm) in the United States.

290mw is almost 3x the power of most standard LoRa and Meshtastic radios, so there will be a noticeable improvement in Tx power and transmit distance.

However, under FCC rules, operation of this device in the base shipping configuration in the United States must not exceed the power levels authorized under its FCC grant of certification. Devices will ship with compliant power settings.

Because of this, the product was renamed two months prior to public launch as the RAKwireless High Power Booster Starter Kit, removing the reference of 1-watt from the advertised name due to discovered limitations. Our goal is to proceed by making all data public, and with an abundance of transparency.

FAQ

Timeline- was this product ever advertised for sale as 1-watt capable?

The product was not. It was announced as a future product capable of 1-watt in December 2025. We did not take orders or pre-orders of the product. In early August when FCC testing was complete, we announced the FCC limit and notified our beta subscribers via email before the product was made available for sale. All advertisements were updated accordingly at the same time. This product has never been sold with an advertisement of 1-watt capability.

Is the hardware capable of 1-watt power?

The product is FCC certified and sold to operate at 290 mW in the USA which is almost 3x as powerful as standard LoRa radios. That is the product's rated specification. Rokland does not support operation outside the device's FCC certified parameters, and any modification to exceed those parameters may violate FCC regulations.

Will this change in the future?

The primary reason for the limitation is to get compliance with lower bands used in LoRa but not by Meshtastic. Together with RAKwireless we are exploring a separate certification at higher power for Meshtastic but are not able to confirm at this time if that is forthcoming. Users should purchase understanding the FCC limits and not expecting a change.

What about other high power products on the market?

We encourage users to review FCC reports of other competing radios for a direct comparison. Manufacturers, especially those outside the USA, may not reveal FCC limits in advertisements.
