Troubleshooting Bluetooth Pairing (Meshtastic)
If your device isn’t showing up in the Meshtastic app, follow the steps below in order.
1) Confirm it’s in Bluetooth pairing mode
- Power / wake it fully: If it has a button, press it to wake (some tags sleep aggressively). If it’s battery powered, make sure it’s charged.
- Look for LED behavior: Many tags blink when awake/advertising. No LED activity can mean it’s asleep, dead battery, or firmware not running.
2) Use the Meshtastic app’s built-in “Scan”
- Go to Bluetooth and use Scan (don’t rely on the phone OS Bluetooth device list).
- Stop scan → wait ~10 seconds → start scan again (BLE scanning can miss advertisements).
3) Eliminate phone-side Bluetooth permission issues (most common)
iPhone (iOS)
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth → make sure Meshtastic is ON
- Settings → Meshtastic → ensure Bluetooth is allowed
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on, then reboot iPhone (surprisingly effective)
Android
- Settings → Apps → Meshtastic → Permissions:
-
Nearby devices = AllowLocation = Allow (required for BLE scanning on many Android versions)
- Turn Location Services ON while scanning (you can disable later—just enable for pairing)
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on, then reboot phone
4) Make sure it’s not already connected to another phone
BLE devices often only allow one active connection. If it was previously paired, the device may be reconnecting to a different phone nearby. Disable Bluetooth on the other phone (or walk it out of range) and scan again.
5) Try pairing with a different phone, if possible
This quickly tells you whether the issue is phone-specific (permissions/settings) or device-specific (battery/firmware/hardware).
