Is Meshtastic a Starlink Alternative? Believe it or not, we get asked this question often.
If you are well familiar with the Meshtastic project, you already know the key differences. But if you are just getting started, it may not be so clear.
Both are communications tools. There is some overlap, but they have different purposes. Asking this question is like asking if an umbrella is a good alternative to a tarp. It depends on your use case. Walking to your car? A tarp would be ridiculous. Need to cover appliances in your truck bed? You won’t want to use an umbrella.
Understanding which platform is better for your use case requires knowing your goals.
Starlink is Satellite Internet.
Meshtastic is point-to-point text or data based communications.
If your goal is Internet access, you need to pay for it through a service like Starlink. There is no such thing as free Internet in most cases, at least not ethically. Meshtastic runs at the sub-1 Ghz frequency, with good point to point range, but low packet transfer rates. It does not provide Internet access, or the ability to transfer larger files like video or audio.
Starlink requires monthly payments 💵
Meshtastic does not.
If your goal is to exchange text messages with another party and you don’t want to pay for service- or want to send messages when cell service is down- Meshtastic is a better solution.
Starlink requires access to a satellite.
Meshtastic is off-grid.
While satellite coverage is very good these days, it is not truly off-grid. Using Starlink means paying an ISP and having your data route through their corporate infrastructure. With Meshtastic, data is point to point. It is off-grid. There is no infrastructure. You are the network. No base station or tower is needed. Data hops off other nodes but it is 256 AES encrypted so the data is not accessible to third parties. Use Meshtastic for communication when other comms like 4G and 5G are down, or when you want your data off-grid.
Know your goals
If you need Internet access, you will need 4G, 5G, WiFi access nearby, or Starlink. Meshtastic is not an ISP or Internet service. If you need text based comms, 4G, 5G, WiFi, and Starlink may be overkill or, in the case of WiFi, not provide enough range. Meshtastic can cover miles of range point-to-point and is a good solution for private, off-grid messaging without any monthly fees or subscriptions.
