ALFA R36AH v2 Multifunction Wireless Router & Repeater for ALFA USB WiFi adapter

$79.97

The ALFA R36AH v2 is a special high speed 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router with USB port that allows you to share the long range Wi-Fi connection of an ALFA Tube-UAC2 Dual Band Outdoor USB WiFi receiver, or it's indoor version AWUS036ACHM

Boost and share a 5 GHz WiFi signal, or a 2.4 GHz signal with multiple devices at once.

Perfect for extending a WiFi signal into an RV at a campground (additional components required). This device cannot repeat a WiFi signal without a compatible ALFA USB WiFi receiver.

ALFA R36AH v2 comes with firmware to support ALFA's dual band WiFi receiver models Tube-UAC2 and AWUS036ACHM. This firmware is not compatible with the ALFA R36A routers.

To use this device to share a Wi-Fi signal, you will also need one of the above devices or an older model like Tube-UNA or AWUS036NH. Then simply connect your computer to the R36AH via ethernet cable or Wi-Fi connection for a one-time configuration and setup. Connect the ALFA USB adapter to the R36AH, and using Wi-Fi scanning software built-into the R36AH, you can scan for and connect to available wireless networks in your area. Once the R36AH has connected to a network, you will be prompted to name and password protect your own new local Wi-Fi network, offering any device within a few hundred feet a strong Wi-Fi connection.

This is operating system independent and can be used with any computer or tablet with Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS, or iPad/tablet.

THE ALFA R36AH combined with the ALFA AWUS036ACHM & Directional Antenna

Living on a boat, I've used ALFA setups at my marinas going back around 15 years. I started with the original R36 then the R36A and now the R36AH. I kept checking in every so often to see if they had released an R36 that had 5GHz capability. All I can say is wow! If only I could post a video showing a speed test on my monitor for this review. With a boosted outdoor directional antenna connected directly to my laptop, I am seeing download speeds as high as 93 Mbs. Average speeds during busier times of day are between 75 & 85 Mbs. When connected to my new ALFA R36AH I am seeing speeds of between 40 & 50 Mbs on devices throughout the boat. IMPORTANT: In my experience, a boosted directional antenna plays a huge role in the quality of your connection speeds. The more narrow the signal pattern the better. Do you need to take the time to make sure it's pointed directly at the AP? Yes. But that takes me about 3 to 4 minutes with a free downloadable WiFi-signal-meter tool like Vistumbler.

Cheap but very effective wireless for a boat

The title says it all. People can spend thousand$ to get good wireless on a boat. For years, I've been doing it for under $50 using Alfa.
A while back, I upgraded my previous Alfa wireless 'system' to a 2.4/5G Tube (U) booster, with a 9dB antenna mounted atop an 8ft aluminum pole. It works great in an environment crowded with boats, masts, rigging etc. However, my R36 router wasn't able to handle 5G, so I could only use a USB connection to my laptop. Adding the R36AH router/repeater gives about 300Mbps throughout the boat. With 9 wireless transmitters at the marina, I select the best one. My current speed test for data download is 8Mbps;however, the marina has been having ongoing problems with the network--not the Alfa's fault. A week ago, the download speed was around 200Mbps.
As for cost, my total cost is about $150 to $200 including extra cable, connectors etc.

Good instructions and theory on antenna placements

While the grammar isn't the best, the antenna placement instructions were very good. Antenna placement, inside antenna with respect to outside antenna is key to booster performance.
